Latest news about e-Ink book readers

20.11.24. Amazon unveiled new USB Manager for Send to Kindle for Mac

Amazon has discreetly unveiled new capabilities for Send to Kindle for Mac. This official software package enables Macintosh users to effortlessly send PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP and EPUB files to the various Kindle 2024 models and the Kindle Scribe. There is additional functionality today, with a completely new update. It has just added support for USB file transfers and the required drivers. The USB Manager feature functions with Intel and Mac M1-M3 computers running MacOS 12. Amazon probably prepared this support documentation before the new M4 Mac Mini, iMac and other systems were revealed last week. I am confident the new Send to Kindle for Mac will accommodate M4; if you manage to get it to work, please share your thoughts below. So Mac users will no longer need to install unreliable third-party programs or drivers simply to use the USB feature to send digital content to the Kindle from a Mac system. It seems Amazon is finally providing Mac users with some focus.

2024. New Kindle e-readers no longer connect as USB drives

The latest generation of Kindles, including the illustrious Kindle Paperwhite, the poetic Kindle Scribe 2 and 1 and the rumored Kindle Colorsoft (which may or may not be able to interpret hues you can’t even see), all share one curious trait: they no longer appear as external drives when you plug them into your PC or Mac. No, Amazon has quietly guided them away from the freedom of USB file transfer, much like a chaperone at a particularly rowdy school dance. The purpose? Probably to keep DRM in its rightful, invisible place and to discourage you from gallivanting off with files to dubious pirate websites. Meanwhile, the old guard—venerable 9th-generation Kindles and the like—still proudly show up as drives when connected, happily helping their owners sideload and backup ebooks as if this whole "new file system called MTP" business were nothing more than an annoying rumor.

2024. Meebook M6C Color e-Reader is now available

Mebook has launched the new M6C Color e-reader on Amazon for $199. It features a 6-inch E INK Kaleido 3-color e-paper display with color resolution of 536 × 724 with 150 PPI and it can showcase 4096 different colors. The body hue is a lovely soft white on the front and back plating. The battery is 2200mAh, which should be adequate for a month of reading; its dimensions are 5.02 x 3.6 x 0.25 inches, weighing 90 grams. Mebook M6C has Google Android 11. The UI is heavily customized with a bright and cheerful user interface, making it easy to use your fingers to engage with all the functionality. However, Android 11 is a bit outdated; lots of their competitors are running Android 12 and some are using Android 13, which provides better long-term app support, not to mention additional security.

2024. reMarkable Paper Pro adds color and light

Norwegian company reMarkable has launched a new model, Paper Pro, that brings the company’s vision of merging PC with paper closer to fruition, adding color and functionality while preserving the philosophy of focus. The $499 Paper Pro — a new naming scheme to signify it as a premium alternative to the now-$379 reMarkable 2, not a direct successor — is noteworthy for its inclusion of both color and a "frontlight," though both features are somewhat subdued. The color remains subtle and you wouldn’t want to read a comic on the device, but the purpose of adding color is to enhance interactive and creative possibilities. Previously, you were confined to black and white, but now you can highlight, circle, jot and sketch in several distinct colors (they blend but appear best in their pure form). The new frontlight is designed to replace the need for external light shining on the screen, not to serve as a light source itself. It’s also fixed to a specific color temperature range because too much variation would affect the color tone.

2024. PocketBook unveiled new Verse Pro Color with 6″ Kaleido 3 Screen

PocketBook has launched the PocketBook Verse Pro Color, a new ereader featuring a 6″ E Ink Kaleido 3 screen, similar to the recently released Kobo Clara Colour. Priced at $169, it is $20 more than the Kobo, but offers additional features such as physical page buttons, text-to-speech (TTS) support and a generally higher build quality. Running on PocketBook's Linux-based software, the Verse Pro Color doesn't support Android apps but is compatible with KOReader and other apps. It includes 16GB of storage, a quad-core CPU for improved performance and is waterproof, though it lacks a memory card slot. The device has an indented screen, Smartlight with adjustable color temperature, Bluetooth for TTS and audiobooks and a USB port for audio adapters. Additionally, it supports Adobe DRM for purchased and library ebooks, along with various DRM-free formats.

2024. Kindle software update re-introduced Book Lists

In a move that might be described as "thoroughly over-engineered," Amazon’s Kindle e-readers are receiving yet another software update, this time lumbering under the gloriously cumbersome name of firmware version 5.16.10.0.1. Targeting the 10th and 11th generation Kindles—including the illustrious Kindle Scribe—this update performs the breathtaking feat of renaming "Your Reading Lists" to the slightly snappier "Your Lists," where your carefully hoarded Amazon books and samples now reside, accessible via the Samples filter in your Library. Alongside this monumental rebranding effort come the usual suspects: performance improvements, bug fixes, and "general enhancements" (whatever those might be). For those who can’t wait, the update is available for manual download from Amazon’s Kindle Software Updates page; for the more laid-back among us, it will waft its way automatically into devices during one of those serendipitous moments when the Kindle is plugged in, connected to Wi-Fi, and entirely unsuspecting—over the course of weeks, naturally.

2024. Kindle e-readers cannot access Overdrive Books anymore

The Amazon Kindle content system, in a manner not unlike a hyperactive Vogon bureaucrat with a grudge, has descended into chaos. Users, brimming with the innocent hope of diving into their freshly purchased books, are instead greeted with a void of technical ineptitude. The trusty *Send to Kindle* feature, which many had come to rely upon like a digital towel in the vast galaxy of reading, has been sulking inoperably for three weeks, steadfastly refusing to function. Meanwhile, Overdrive and its sprightlier cousin, Libby, have been locked in a peculiar tango of dysfunction with Amazon for months, leaving frustrated librarians, including yours truly, to witness patrons hurl their Kindles into existential despair as their devices stubbornly refuse recognition. This kerfuffle, affecting both Android and iOS Libby apps as well as the Overdrive website, is rendered doubly exasperating by the fact that sending library ebooks to Kindles is a privilege only extended to U.S. users, thanks to a licensing deal that feels as obtuse as a Krikkit warship treaty.

2024. Readmoo and PocketBook join forces to launch Color E Ink Tablet

Readmoo and PocketBook have come together to launch a new e-note device featuring a 10.3-inch color e-paper display. While there isn’t a lot that we know of the upcoming e-note device, what is known is that the e-note will offer Readmoo reading and mooSound services. The e-reader will be running Android with support for Google Play. The e-note will have a simple design in that there are going to be thinner bezels along the sides while having a comparatively thicker forehead and chin. There is the PocketBook branding on the top left. Overall the e-note does not break any new ground when it comes to the design but still looks fresh and appealing. The 10.3-inch color e-paper display benefits from a front light feature which allows for comfortable reading even in the dark. The e-note is going to be accompanied by an app that can be used for making notes, scribbling, or drawing, whatever the need might be. The notes can be saved or shared easily, thereby allowing for enhanced functionality with the device. The e-note boasts a thin profile and has a light design that makes it easy to carry around.

2024. Nook eReaders and Apps Can Sync Sideloaded eBooks Now

Some users on the Nook subreddit have discovered that Nook ereaders and apps can now sync sideloaded ebooks between devices and apps, although it's unclear how long this feature has been available or which models support it. Given Barnes & Noble's history with sideloading, this capability is surprising and might even seem like an unintended bug. There’s no mention of this feature for non-B&N content on the Barnes & Noble website or in their help section. To use it, simply sideload the same ebook file on your Nook devices and apps and your reading position will sync automatically. It works with EPUBs and possibly PDFs, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

2024. Moan Pantone 6 e-Reader With Kaleido 3 Display Launched

In the vast and sprawling cosmos of entry-level e-readers, where innovation often resembles a particularly lethargic game of leapfrog, Moan’s Pantone 6 arrives like an improbably sleek spaceship armed with a Kaleido 3 color e-paper display. This wizardry is bolstered by a layer of high-aluminosilicate glass and an electroplated AG film process, which cunningly banishes glare and presumably any meddlesome Vogon poetry for good measure, e-Reader Pro reported. Weighing in at a delightfully imperceptible 152 grams and a thickness of 7.25 mm (surely designed to vanish neatly into a pocket or perhaps another dimension), it hums along on Android 11 with a 1800 mAh battery promising a rather heroic 30 days of standby time. All this can be acquired for the thoroughly terrestrial sum of 999 yuan (roughly 138 USD), from the Moan JD store, where one might imagine it nestles smugly alongside other improbably efficient pieces of technology.

2024. Kobo releases new firmware for Colour e-readers

Kobo, in what one can only assume is a spirited attempt to keep its latest e-readers in perfect harmony with the cosmic fabric of electronic stability, has launched a software update for its shiniest new models: the Clara Colour, Libra Colour, and Clara BW. Known for their startling knack for both performance and affordability—a rare and dizzying combination—these devices are getting a touch more robust, though the specifics of what’s been fixed or stabilized remain a mystery, presumably known only to Kobo and perhaps a small cabal of hyper-intelligent squid. The rollout begins today, promising that every reader will soon be up-to-date, though—let's be honest—other models may now feel rather abandoned, left to ponder their own existence. Updating is blissfully simple: press the sync button. For those of a DIY disposition, firmware patches await on Kobo’s site; just select your model, download it to your PC or MAC, connect your e-reader with the USB-C cable, drop the file into the root folder, and with a quick reboot, voilà—you’re in possession of whatever faintly mysterious improvements this update holds.

2024. New 10.3″ Bigme inkNoteX Color with Android 13 is now available

The newly launched Bigme inkNoteX Color, featuring a sizable 10.3-inch color E Ink display, is now purchasable on Amazon albeit at a steep price tag of $699, making it one of the priciest eNotes available presently. Despite the cost, it boasts premium specifications for an E Ink gadget, running on open Android 13 with the capability to install third-party applications. Equipped with an octa-core 2.4GHz MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with expandability via a memory card slot, the inkNoteX Color also incorporates advanced features like a fingerprint sensor, wireless charging stylus, dual speakers, a microphone, USB-C port, dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. Additionally, it sports both front (5MP) and rear (8MP) cameras, a 4000mAh battery and measures 225.6 x 191 x 6.6mm in size. Although its weight remains unspecified, it appears to include a leather case as part of the package.

2024. Tolino e-readers will no longer use Android

Tolino e-readers, initially targeting the European German-speaking demographic, have been on the market since 2013. In 2019, Kobo took over the hardware design for all forthcoming e-readers while maintaining Android as the operating system. However, a recent report suggests a significant shift: upcoming models like the Tolino Shine, Tolino Vision Color and Shine Color will run on Linux with an entirely revamped UI and menu layout. This marks a transition where Kobo oversees both hardware and software development. Upon their release in June, these new Tolino e-readers will offer a user experience resembling Kobo's, though with subtle distinctions. Users can still access various German bookstores, purchase and listen to audiobooks and enjoy continued support for European libraries, facilitated by LCP DRMs.

2024. Kobo has introduced the Kobo Clara BW E-reader

Picture this, if you will: the Kobo Clara BW, a marvelous black-and-white e-reader engineered with the sort of understated brilliance that would leave even hyperintelligent pan-dimensional beings quietly impressed. Featuring a gloriously compact 6-inch glare-free E Ink Carta 1300 HD screen (which seems to smugly whisper, “Rain? Splashes? Mere trifles!” thanks to its waterproof bravado), it transforms the act of reading into an effortless glide through Kobo’s vast library of audiobooks and ebooks. With the understated oomph of a MediaTek MT8113L processor, paired with Bluetooth 5.0 to beam your favorite words into your choice of earbuds, headphones, or speakers, this device practically hums contentment at every turn. A USB-C port promises charging and content transfer with the smug simplicity of an evolved species, while a modest 1,500 mAh battery and a frame so portable (112 x 160 x 9.2 mm, weighing just 174 g) might make you suspect it’s hiding a tiny improbability drive. At a price of $129.99 (USD), the Kobo Clara BW might just be the hitchhiker's guide to your next literary adventure—don’t panic, just read.

2024. Pocketbook released new Kaleido 3 e-reader Era Color

In a move that would likely baffle, delight, and possibly even impress beings from all over the galaxy, Pocketbook has introduced the Pocketbook Era Color—a cunning little gadget armed with Kaleido 3 color e-paper technology, which is precisely as advanced and mystifying as it sounds. Not only does this sleek 7-inch device come equipped with audiobook support, a built-in speaker (ideal for those who feel the urge to read with their ears), and Text-to-Speech functionality (for those who prefer their e-books read aloud by a robot), it also features SMARTlight, offering a soothing glow with a delicate sliding scale between "sunlit optimism" and "end-of-the-universe mellow." It's waterproof, too (IPX8, for those who measure their waterproofness in numbers), meaning it’s capable of surviving both a good read in the bath and the occasional cosmic downpour. At $259.99, it’s primed to bring forth vivid e-book covers, comics, webtoons, and PDFs with a display resolution of 1264×1660, ensuring you get your full share of pixelated beauty as you dive into the vast realms of text, colors, and possibly existential quandaries.

2024. Onyx Boox released new Poke 5 with Carta 1300 E Ink display

In a universe where e-readers strive to stand out like improbability drives at a tea party, the Onyx Boox Poke 5 arrives as the sleekly evolved cousin of the Poke 5S, now equipped with the E Ink Carta 1300 display—light-years ahead of its predecessor's Carta 1100 screen. Encased in a microcrystal etched tempered glass cover (the kind of thing Zaphod Beeblebrox might mistake for a cocktail coaster), it offers sharper visuals than a Vogon's poetry critique, with a resolution upgrade to 300 PPI from the mere mortal 212 PPI of the Poke 5S. The 6-inch display remains loyal to its dimensions, and with Android 11 under the hood, you can load it up with third-party apps galore—probably including one to remind you not to panic. At a price of $143, it’s an intergalactic bargain for those craving the thrill of digital page-turning on a whole new level.

2024. iReader Neo 2 provides a 35% increase in overall performance vs the previous generation

The new iReader Neo 2 utilizes the latest generation E INK technology, Carta 1300 and provides a massive 35% increase in overall performance vs the previous generation. This means if you thought the 11th generation Kindle Paperwhite was fast, this trounces it. It even supports English, so there is a massive market for it. The iReader Neo 2 features a 6-inch E INK Carta 1300 black and white e-paper panel. It has a resolution of 1072×1448 with 300 PPI. It features a recessed bezel design, providing a superior reading experience. Most e-readers on the market have a glass layer protecting the screen. There is a USBC port for charging and transferring documents and it is powered by a 1700 mAh battery. The iReader Neo 2 runs Android 11 as the operating system but doesn’t have an app store. I have heard that you can sideload in apps on this model, but you couldn’t on the first gen Neo. The main UI is at the bottom and has links to the library, store and settings menu. It retails for $239.99.

2024. Kindle update improves settings adjustment

In the unfathomable expanse of the Kindle universe, where e-ink pages hold dominion over the written word, Amazon has unfurled firmware update 5.16.7 for its sleek array of modern e-readers—an illustrious troupe featuring the latest Paperwhite, the rather clever Scribe, and the stalwart base Kindle. While this update, in the grand tapestry of technological evolution, might appear as thrilling as a Vogon poetry reading, its mission is clear: to quietly bolster performance, exterminate pesky bugs, and polish the device experience to a state of nearly ineffable functionality (as per the mysterious scribblings in the change log). Contrast this with the previous update, which paraded through the digital cosmos with such novelties as a reimagined settings menu for navigational bliss, a "Date and time" setting that, against all odds, lets you set them, and even a special little nook for screenshots to call their own. One can only hypothesize, in the speculative manner of pan-galactic hitchhikers, that version 5.16.7 serves to tidy up the loose ends left in its predecessor’s wake—possibly even extending battery life, as whispered in hushed tones by a few users who’ve ventured into its post-update reality.

2024. Onyx unveiled Boox Kant 2 e-reader

The Onyx Boox Kant 2, which, if it had any more gadgets packed in, might actually sprout wings and demand a boarding pass, is a clever new e-reader that masquerades as a smartphone. Nestled within its sleek form is a 6.13-inch E Ink Carta Plus display, which, with a thoroughly respectable resolution of 824 x 1648 pixels and 16 shades of tasteful gray, delivers an experience so engrossing it might make real paper feel insecure. A 2GHz quad-core processor, cozily partnered with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable, naturally, for those who never delete anything), keeps everything running smoothly. Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, and a USB-C port? Of course. A 3950mAh battery? Absolutely, because you’ll need the juice when you’ve lost yourself in the wilderness of your library. Running on Android 11, it's as user-friendly as a slightly tipsy but helpful tour guide. Splash-resistant, equipped with a speaker and microphone (because why shouldn’t an e-reader talk back occasionally?), and packing features like auto-rotation, a flashlight, and a built-in dictionary, the Kant 2 supports numerous e-book and audiobook formats. No camera, though – because even the Kant 2 has its limits.

2023. iReader Color7 with 7-inch Kaleido 3 display launched

The iReader Color7, a device that could only have emerged from a dimension where e-readers are designed by mildly eccentric geniuses, debuts with a 7-inch color E-Ink display boasting a Kaleido 3 feature—because why settle for a mere 2048 colors when you can have 4096 of them cavorting about with a 30 percent boost in vividness? Its 28-level front light system, equipped with both warm and cold controls (presumably to ensure your eyeballs feel suitably pampered), pairs delightfully with its razor-thin 4mm profile at its slimmest—proof that elegance and a healthy disregard for bulk can coexist. Ingeniously weighted for one-handed use—because two hands are so passé—the Color7 flaunts a proprietary color engine delivering a 40 percent improvement in contrast, as if daring reality itself to look drab by comparison. Customizable buttons lurk on its thicker edge for activities like page-turning (and possibly summoning snacks, though this remains unconfirmed), while an 1800mAh battery keeps the show going for a week. USB-C swoops in for data transfer, and dual microphones stand by for whatever your whims demand. At $330, it’s not just an e-reader; it’s a statement, an adventure, and possibly a lifestyle, all disguised as a sleek rectangle.
