2022. Ebook catalog software Calibre 6.3 fine-tunes full text search



In several updated Calibre developers added some new improvements and bug fixes for full-text search, introduced in version 6. They added a button to re-index a book - useful if the book's contents have been changed outside calibre. Search queries start supporting quoting using "docstrings" for easier escaping. The search now ignores soft hyphens when extracting searchable text from books (though you will have to re-index your library to take advantage of this). The e-book viewer now allows searching for nearby words using a new "Nearby words" search mode. New fts_search and fts_index commands allow to perform full text searching from the command line.


2018. Book Collector 18 adds auto-coud-syncing



Popular ebook catalog software for Mac, Book Collector, now includes the anticipated Auto-Cloud-Syncing feature, along with numerous enhancements to the main screen, making it both faster and more reliable. The free CLZ Cloud service is central to all its cataloging solutions (desktop, mobile and web), serving as the connector that integrates them. Tens of thousands of users utilize CLZ Cloud syncing to transfer data between their desktop, Connect and mobile applications, update their online collection list, or simply maintain an online backup of their valuable database. With automatic syncing, you can add or modify books in Book Collector and these updates will upload to the CLZ Cloud immediately. If you make changes using the CLZ Books mobile app or directly in Book Connect, just launch your software and the changes will automatically download.


2018. LibraryThing gets Alexa skill


Online book catalog service LibraryThing now offers a Skill for Amazon Echo, Dot and other Alexa devices. The LibraryThing Alexa Skill is an unusual but straightforward way to add books to your LibraryThing account. Simply stand in the foyer with a stack of new books or on top of a creaky bookshelf ladder in the attic and say: Alexa, tell LibraryThing to add [Book Title] by [Author]. Alexa will attempt to add the book. If it doesn't succeed, for better results, skip the title and author and just read the barcode or ISBN number from the back of your book: Alexa, tell LibraryThing to add [Barcode or ISBN Number]. There are also a few other commands like: Alexa, ask LibraryThing how many books I have. At least you can impress your friends with your smart personal assistant and your extensive library.


2017. calibre 3.0 improves Content server



Ebook catalog software Calibre 3 has been released today. The most significant new feature is a completely revamped Calibre Content Server. This Content Server lets you wirelessly browse your Calibre books on any modern smartphone or tablet and even read the books directly in your phone’s browser. The books are stored in offline storage on the device, so you don’t need to keep Calibre running or maintain a constant internet connection to read them. Additionally, Calibre 3 now natively supports high-resolution (Retina) displays, offers the option to install various icon themes (with many available to suit different preferences) and can convert all the supported book formats to Microsoft Word (DOCX) files. Alongside the support for conversion from Word, you can now seamlessly switch between Word documents and e-book formats to your heart’s content.


2017. Older versions of Adobe Digital Editions are no longer compatible with Overdrive



Ebook catalog software Adobe Digital Editions allows you to transfer e-books borrowed from the library or another bookstore to your e-reader, smartphone, or tablet. Many users have been encountering numerous errors recently with older versions of Digital Editions. In recent months, Google Play, Overdrive and various other online retailers have updated their Adobe Content Server, causing compatibility issues for those using outdated versions of Adobe Digital Editions. If you use this software, it’s advisable to upgrade to version 4.5, which appears to function correctly at present.


2016. Amazon is closing book cataloging service Shelfari, merging it with Goodreads



Amazon is to close Shelfari, a social network for book lovers with various recommendation and cataloging features. Since Amazon purchased Goodreads back in 2013, it has been neglecting Shelfari for years and now it’s officially getting the ax. If you login to Shelfari you get greeted with the following message: "Shelfari is in the process of merging with Goodreads and is no longer accepting new accounts. We recommend joining Goodreads.com if you haven’t already done so". Calling it a merger is just a nice way of saying Shelfari is closing down for good.


2009. Alfa Ebooks Manager 0.7.5 optimizes PDF book catalog management



The new version of Alfa Ebooks Manager - v.0.7.5 has arrived. Unlin now Alfa Ebooks Manager used Adobe Acrobat Pro to render PDF ebooks, so that you could view them in 3D space. But as this software is quite expensive and some users can't afford it, the developers decided to provide another option - GhostScript. It's a free interpreter for PDF files. Besides, no you can import and export books between your Google Library and Alfa Ebooks Manager. To import the book list from Google Books save it as XML file on your computer. And the most impressive new feature is Virtual 3D-Wall View that turms your e-Library into interactive wall of books. The best way to understand what is it - is to give it a try. When scanning ebook files on your computer, Alfa Ebooks Manager tries to retrieve ebook ISBN from the file body. Of course, there is no standard, that defines exact ISBN position in the ebook file. That is why sometimes ISBN can be corrupted. Now you have an option to check if the given ISBN is valid using isbndb.com.
