2022. Onyx Boox Leaf 2 gets Android 11 and bigger battery

Onyx Boox introduces the Leaf2, a 7-inch E Ink reader with a Carta 1200 panel featuring a 300 PPI resolution of 1680 x 1264. The e-reader is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, placing it among the highest in its category. Additionally, it offers the option to expand storage by up to 512 GB via external means. At the heart of the device is a 2.0 GHz Qualcomm processor. It is powered by a 2000 mAh battery, which should provide several days of use before needing a recharge. It operates on Android 11 and supports 2.4G Wi-Fi and 5G connectivity. Other features include a USB Type-C port, an integrated microphone and single-speaker audio support. Weighing just 180 grams, the Leaf2 is extremely easy to handle and use. It also has a set of buttons for Power and Page Turn functions. The e-reader is priced at $205.

2022. New basic Kindle offers premium Paperwhite features for under $100

Amazon has introduced a new 6-inch Kindle, touting it as its "lightest and most compact" e-reader to date. Although this device is the latest addition to Amazon's standard Kindle lineup, its features are more comparable to the $139.99 Paperwhite model. It incorporates several attributes from the premium range, including a 300ppi high-resolution display for "crystal-clear text and images" (up from 167ppi), a dark mode and USB-C charging. Additional enhancements include a battery life of up to six weeks per charge and 16GB of storage, which is twice the capacity of its 2019 predecessor. The adjustable front light has also been reinstated. Notably, this new Kindle is priced at $99.99 — just a $10 increase from the previous generation, making it an attractive option for anyone looking to upgrade from an older model that lost the capability to browse, borrow, or purchase books directly from the Kindle Store last month.

2022. Kobo software update adds Sideloaded mode

Kobo's new firmware version 4.31 is a relatively minor update that enhances language support, fixes some bugs and is expected to improve battery life on the Kobo Sage. One feature not mentioned in the release notes is a new Sideloaded Mode that allows users to use a Kobo e-reader without signing in. Thanks to Davidfor at MobileRead for highlighting this and explaining how it functions. Kobo updates are typically rolled out in phases, so you might need to wait several weeks for the new firmware to automatically download and install during a sync.

2018. Onyx Boox Euclid 9.7 inch e-reader is now available

The Onyx Boox Euclid is a new 9.7-inch e-reader featuring a front-lit screen and Android 6.0. The E Ink Carta display comes with the MOON Light system, SNOW Field function and touch controls. This model could be an excellent choice for those who frequently read academic or technical materials. Its large, eye-friendly display with lighting, combined with a robust quad-core 1.6GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, are ideal for reading PDF and DjVu files. A built-in Wi-Fi module enables full Internet browsing and the pre-installed Google Play significantly enhances its functionality, offering access to hundreds of thousands of third-party Android apps, including free ones. The low power consumption of E Ink displays and a 3000 mAh battery provide up to a month of independent use. The new e-reader is priced at $379.

2015. Kobo launches the Touch 2.0 eReader

Kobo has recently unveiled its second new e-reader for the year. The Kobo Touch 2.0 refreshes the four-year-old Kobo Touch e-reader with enhanced storage, extended battery life, a quicker processor and a reduced price. It features a 1GHz processor, 4GB of storage and WiFi, but lacks audio capabilities and a card slot. Its 6-inch display offers a resolution of 800 x 600 and an IR touchscreen, though it does not include a frontlight. Essentially, this e-reader is designed to compete with the basic Kindle and it comes with a price tag to match. The Kobo Touch 2.0 will be released on September 9 in the US and Canada, retailing for $89.99. While it falls between the $79 and $99 price range of the budget Kindle, it may not provide the best value. Instead, we suggest considering the Kobo Glo HD, which costs only $40 more but features a sharper screen and a frontlight.
